Teflon Tape on a Seal Bar: How to Replace It and Prevent Sticking
Share
PTFE (Teflon) tape on the seal bar keeps the heated surface from sticking to the pouch. When the tape wears out, packages stick, wrinkle or seal badly. This guide covers replacing the tape, preventing sticking, and choosing and fitting lid gaskets.
Why seal bars use Teflon tape
The tape sits between the heated seal bar and the pouch so film does not stick to the hot surface. It is a wear item and needs replacing from time to time.
Signs the tape needs replacing
- Pouch film sticks to the seal bar.
- The tape is torn, scorched, wrinkled or lifting.
- Seals are patchy or wrinkled even though the wire is fine.
Plain tape or ZONE tape
| Tape | What the product page says |
|---|---|
| Teflon tape, per foot and 18-yard roll | 2 in wide, 5 mil thick. Fits a multitude of vacuum machines. |
| ZONE tape, per foot and 18-yard roll | 1.5 in wide, 5 mil thick, with an adhesive-free center strip so it does not stick to the seal wire. Fits a multitude of vacuum machines. |
The center strip is useful when the tape sits directly over the seal wire. Check that the width suits your seal bar before you order.
How to replace the tape
- Unplug the machine and let the seal bar cool completely.
- Peel off the old tape.
- Clean off leftover glue or grease. Oops glue remover is made for this, and the label has directions.
- Let the surface dry and make sure it is clean.
- Apply the new tape smoothly with no wrinkles, and trim to length.
Use the remover in a ventilated area and follow the label and safety data sheet.
Why packaging still sticks
Check for worn or dirty tape, residue left on the seal bar, and film or food getting into the sealing area. If sealing is still poor, check the seal wire. See how to choose a seal wire.
Lid gaskets
On a chamber machine the lid gasket forms the airtight seal between the lid and the chamber body, and keeps outside air from leaking back in during the vacuum cycle. A flattened, cracked or shrunken gasket lets air bleed in slowly, so the machine runs its full cycle but never reaches the vacuum it used to.
Signs a gasket needs replacing
- Vacuum has dropped gradually over weeks or months. A sudden failure is more often the seal wire or the seal bar airbag.
- A faint hiss right after the lid closes and the pump starts.
- Visible flattening, cracking or a permanent groove where the lid presses down.
- The gasket has come loose from its channel or has gaps at the corners or seam.
If the seal looks fine along most of its length but fails in one spot, look at the seal wire or the seal bar airbag instead.
Sponge or silicone, and which size
Gaskets are not universal even within a brand. They vary by profile (round tube, D-profile or sponge) and by diameter, and ours are priced and sold per foot so you can cut to the length your lid channel needs. A gasket that is a millimeter off will not seat properly. Some may need glue to stay in position.
| Type | Sizes |
|---|---|
| MSLG grey sponge | 6mm (MSLG050, grey or black), 7mm, 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, 11mm |
| MS silicone tube | 6mm (MS-100), 8mm hard (MS-110), 8mm soft (MS-111), 10mm (MS-120), 11mm (MS-125) |
We also carry a D-profile gasket, which suits larger than usual lid tolerances and replaces the round 1/2 in gasket on Sipromac and Berkel machines and the lipped 1/2 in OEM gasket on Promarks machines.
Measure before you order
Measure the gasket on your machine, compare it with the sizes above, and send us your model number if you are unsure. A rough measurement of the old gasket's diameter or thickness helps.
Glue and removal
Where a gasket needs glue, LOCTITE Super Glue Gel Control is made for it. Keep it away from skin and eyes, and use it in a ventilated area. If your machine's gasket sits in a channel designed to hold it, follow the manufacturer's instructions instead of gluing. Remove the old gasket carefully so you do not damage the mounting surface.
